Bromeliad banksia and vases

Banksia, bromeliad and vases

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

Bromeliad from Eveleigh Saturday market. Banksia from the Sunday Southside market.

I have a collection of ceramics and ginger jars bought in the UK at country fetes and junk shops, they have survived many house moves and the journey to Sydney.

Amaryllis 1

Amaryllis 1

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

From the Chinese fruiterer on Regent St, Redfern.
I bought these as three stems of buds.  I didn't believe they would actually bloom but within a week they had opened and ripened into these gorgeous, lush flowers.

Very tropical looking for an end of winter flower.

 Sallet

Sallet

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

Salads were first recorded during Roman times and made from a variety of fresh vegetables.

The word 'sallet' is an old English word. However, tomatoes would not be introduced to Europe until the 16th century and they were called 'love apples'.

A variety of salad greens and reds from the Eastlakes fruiterer.

Sallet 2

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

It was a tradition that the woman with the prettiest hands at the table would toss the salad.

This one includes a dandelion leaf or 'pissenlit' (pee the bed).  A traditional ingredient, so named because of dandelion's diuretic properties.

A variety of salad greens and reds from the Eastlakes fruiterer.
Dandelion leaf from Alexandria Park.

 Pink lillies opened

Opened Lillies

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

From the Eveleigh Saturday market.

These were actually on the stand at the Art Sydney Show.  Over the course of 4 days they opened from pink buds then faded to a pale pink.

Just before they started to open.

Chinese new year lucky crab soup

Chinese New Year good luck soup

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

Yes.  The formerly blue swimmer crab from the Maroubra fish market makes a reappearance as a cooked swimmer crab.  This time I gave him a little buddy - a purplish common shore crab.

The chinese broccoli and tiny purple aubergine came from Marrickville.

Ceramics from the Salvos, Neutral bay.

SOLD

 Peonies

Peonies

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

From the Sunday Southside Market.

I noted that the foiliage of these flowers became spotty as the week wore on.  The deep red stems and edges of the leaves remained as bright as ever however.

 Peonies with ginger jar

Peonies and ginger jar

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

I thought the ginger jar was a good match for the very oriental-looking peonies.

The one on the left dropped its petals soon after painting.

 apricot and strawberry jam

Apricot and strawberry jam

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

Apricots and strawberries from Woolworths.  Apricot leaves, overhanging a fence up the street near our house.

Mr cooked crab again and his little sidekick: purple shore crab.

 Orange hibiscus

Orange Hibiscus

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

I love hibiscus.  I love the way they seem to bloom all year round in Sydney but the most lavish blooms are to be found in December/January.

This one was a beauty found in Coogee.  It faded very quickly after the trip home on the back of a motorbike.

 Pink hibiscus red centre

Pale pink, deep red centre hibiscus

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

I think this variety is my favorite. They seem to be everywhere on the side of the road throughout Sydney.

This one came from Mosman.

 Peachy pink hibiscus

Peachy pink hibiscus

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

I have noticed different leaf colours and shapes amongst different hibiscus varieties.

This one from Cremorne had very soft green leaves to go with the delicate peachy pink flowers.

 Pale pink hibiscus

Pale pink hibiscus

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

This one was also from Coogee.

Hibiscus fade within hours after being picked so I had to work fast to capture all I'd taken.

 gum leaves and flowers

Gum leaves and flowers

Watercolour on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

This twig was blown from a tree around Alexandria.  The marks on the leaves were not distinct bites - it was almost as if something had just scraped the leaf material from each side.

SOLD

 Blue crab soup

Swimmer crab soup

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 39cm w x 24 cm h.

Blue swimmer crab from Maroubra fish mongers. Older style chinese soup bowl from the Salvos in Neutral Bay.

Oh yes.  the crab was finally disposed of in December 2009.
