pink and red hibiscus

Pink and red summer hibiscus.

Watercolour on Arches paper.
Size 57cm h x 39 cm w

Summer hibiscus from Neutral Bay.  I am still amazed at the proliferation of flowering trees - especially hibiscus in many parts of Sydney.

On summer nights I will go out and pick overhanging blooms from bushes or stop when driving by a particularly splendid tree.

peonies

Full blown peonies

Watercolour on Arches paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w approx.

I love it when him indoors buys me flowers - these I didn't get around to painting until the blooms had all but expired and the petals were starting to drop.  They were still beautiful.

marigold

Marigolds

Watercolour on Arches paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

bought flowers - marigolds reminds me of Auckland gardens.  They tend to come alive after nightfall.

Flowering ginger

Watercolour on Arches paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w.

I bought these from the flower shop in Erskineville.  I think the shop assistant thought I was quite odd only buying a couple of spikes

 ranunculusPink and yellow ranunculus

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders waterford paper.

Size 57cm h x 39 cm w.

I love the myriad of colours that ranunculus come in - from palest pastels to the darkest, almost black reds and purples.

These came from Eveleigh Saturday markets - they have fab flowers.

 strelitzia

Strelitzia

Watercolour, silver paint and pastel on paper.

Size 40cm w x 51 cm h.

These were bought at Kirribilli markets one Spring Saturday. I love the moon relected in the shiny leaves of plants - they look magical.

 eucalyptus flowers

Eucalyptus blossoms

Watercolour and pencil on Arches paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

From the Technology park in Alexandria.  You would probably never notice gum flowers - they are usually so high from the ground.

 gum leaves

Gum leaves

Watercolour and pencil on Arches paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

Picked from the side of the road on the way back from Cessnock.  I was amazed at just how bitten plants from the bush are - everything had a bite taken out of it.

 banksia seed pods

Banksia seed pods

Watercolour and pencil on Arches paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

A combination of twigs from the park across the road and an overhanging branch walking home up Regent St, from QVB.

It's taken me a while to get my head around these strange shapes and earthy colours.

 moreton bay fig

Fig twigs

Watercolour and pencil on Arches paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

From Centennial Park.  I could reach these as I was on horseback on my way back from jumping on a Sunday morning.

Have you ever noticed at how figs on different trees ripen at differing times? Giving the bats a steady supply of food.

By the time the figs have ripened to a dark purple they have been long eaten or dropped from the tree - so a bit of artistic licence taken here.

 tulips

Yellow and red tulips

Watercolour and pencil on Arches paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

These were bought at the Eveleigh markets one Saturday morning.  I painted these over a succession of days - watching the petals open and bloom then finally drop, the leaves and stems twisting and curling.  Spectacular.

 poppies

Poppies

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

These were bought at the Eveleigh markets on another Saturday morning.

I love the way the blooms are so blowsy and extravagant on these little hairy, spindly stems

 camelias

Camelias

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

From a garden in Balgowlah.  Camelias are so spectacular but they don't last at all... withinhours of getting them home, the centre of the flower had started to come away from the stem and the petals started dropping.

Had to paint these fast!

 crab soup

Crab soup

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

Blue swimmer crab from Maroubra fish mongers. Older style chinese soup bowl and spoon from the Salvos in Neutral Bay.

This chap is still sitting in the freezer - being taken in and out a number of times over the same amount of days.

I don't think anyone at home will be eating this - just so you know.

 scampi and bok choi

Scampi and bok choi

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

The NZ scampi was bought at the Sydney fish markets one Sunday.  It was a glorious pink with a delicate brace of blue eggs clinging to it's underside.

 taro in the night garden

Taro in the night garden

Watercolour and pencil on Saunders Waterford paper.

Size 24cm w x 39 cm h.

These plants are growing in my courtyard.  The blue velvety leaves came from a piece of taro I bought at Eastlakes.  The large Taro plantcame from Maroubra Sunday market.
